Papercraft research

The French-based artists Zim and Zou (Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann) create beautifully detailed colourful sculptures made from simple materials such as paper. Every inch of their work is meticulosity put together and a joy to look at. the pieces they made recreating retro technology in the vibrantly coloured paper is my personal favourite.

Out of the many creations, they made the camera from above is by far the coolest to me just because of all the detail especially the purple grip part. On their website, they have a video timelapse showcasing the creation of much of the collection. The process involves them taking measurements from the real-world counterparts and noting them so when they start cutting the paper they can get to be the same size as what they are recreating. all the process shown in the video is them sitting down at a cutting mat meticulously cutting paper into the correct dimensions or shutting out tiny details from the paper.

As simple as the process seems it most likely is incredibly difficult and time-consuming. The retro technology sculptures apparently took about a year to make. A year of cutting and gluing paper to eventually get a super interesting final topic. On another page on their website showcasing the piece Forest Folk which is a more original creative work, you can see a photo of what looks like sketches that they started out with as a plan.

Of course, it was safe to Assume that they start out with a plan drawn out on paper but here you can have insight into the specifics of their creation process. It is very interesting to see a glimpse into their time-consuming process of making their wonderful pieces of art. The final pieces they make have a distinct style, the Bright vibrant colours and detail is what makes them stand out amongst other artists
The Colour and creativity are what really draw me into their work. A flobby disc which is usually black and white being made into something so colourful is just so much fun. The colours they choose also complement each other so wonderfully. The neon of the tech makes it seem so childlike almost as if it was a toy. the distinct colour schemes of forest folk make the many little worlds they created feel all so different and unique when compared to each other.
